Ilioupoli, Athens

Interested in a high quality of life in the suburbs? In a neighborhood close to downtown Athens but with a calm and quiet atmosphere, offering a rare combination of urban living and natural forest? Let us introduce you to the Ilioupoli neighborhood.

This suburban neighborhood, one of the most attractive in Athens, is located about six kilometers southeast of the city center and Syntagma Square and about a ten-minute drive from the beaches of Glyfada. It is known for the high quality of life it offers and is considered one of the city’s most prestigious neighborhoods ("Athens’ North Tel Aviv"). It is a top destination for both residents and investors alike.

Ilioupoli is built on a hillside with an unobstructed view of the sea, and features recreational areas for families and young people, schools, shops, cafes, and restaurants. Its development as a suburb of Athens began in 1924, when refugees from Turkey settled there. Since then, it has undergone numerous changes and upheavals, and today, with a population of about 26,000, it is known as a neighborhood with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and excellent transportation access.

One of the unique things about Iliopoli is that, alongside its vibrant urban character, it features a wooded area in its eastern part. This area is part of Mount Hymettus, located east of the neighborhood. The integration of Ilioupoli with Mount Hymettus creates a wonderful area of hiking trails and nature paths, which also feature religious buildings and monuments such as the Church of “Profitis Ilias,” situated on the mountainside and overlooking the city, and the Monastery of "Agios Ioannis," which also serves as a beautiful viewpoint.

Iliopoli has developed significantly in recent years, and there are quite a few new housing projects there at relatively affordable prices. The area is particularly attractive thanks to its excellent transportation links, including metro stations, buses, and major highways. One of the most notable examples of extensive government investment in the Ilioupoli area is a massive urban renewal project with an astronomical investment of approximately eight billion euros—“Smart City on the Athens Riviera.” This is a new complex built to international standards that will be completed in 2027 and will include skyscrapers, luxury hotels, a casino, parks, shopping centers, office towers, and a wealth of entertainment and leisure options.
