The Kolonos neighborhood in Athens

Close to the city center, quiet and comfortable, unpretentious, and considered a prime investment destination—welcome to the Colonos neighborhood, also known as “Academia Platonos,” named after Plato’s Academy in ancient Athens.

The Kolonos neighborhood is located in northeast Athens, near the historic triangle of Syntagma Square, Monastiraki, Psiri, and Plaka, making its location particularly attractive. The neighborhood is also close to Kerameikos Forest, one of the largest forests in Athens, which offers beautiful natural scenery and outdoor attractions.

Kolonos is characterized by high demand due to its proximity to central Athens and its location between metro stations and commercial and cultural districts. As a result, the area features a significant number of student apartments, apartments for young couples, and Airbnb listings. It is considered a preferred destination for real estate investors due to the neighborhood’s future development plans, which include the construction of parks and investments in metro lines. However, real estate prices there are still attractive and have not yet skyrocketed.

When exploring the neighborhoods of Athens, a particularly interesting archaeological site can be found in Kolonos—the “Academy of Plato” park, where the ruins of Plato’s first Academy from ancient times are located. Around 387 BCE, Plato founded the school of philosophy, which is considered the first university (Academy) in human history. The Academy taught not only philosophy but also astronomy, mathematics, politics, and physics. Even the very act of walking through its grounds and along its paths is directly linked to the Western philosophy founded by Plato, which viewed walking along these paths as the foundation and driving force for the development of thought and philosophy (and this is how Aristotle and his other students were educated as well).
