Exarchia neighborhood, Athens

Welcome to the gem of Athens’ street art and bohemian life—the Exarchia neighborhood!

If you’re looking to “think outside the box” and experience a different side of Athens—with plenty of street art, spectacular graffiti, and a vibrant student scene—Exarchia is the place for you. Among Athens’ neighborhoods, Exarchia is located in the heart of the city and is known for its unique, youthful, and vibrant character. Some call it the “Florentin of Athens,” as beyond its youthful vibe, it is home to quite a few artists, writers, and intellectuals.

Precisely because of its intriguing and “subversive” character, the Exarchia neighborhood attracts quite a few tourists and sparks a great deal of interest among them. In this neighborhood, you’ll find fewer brand-name stores and more secondhand shops, record stores, used bookstores, comic book shops, and more. It is important to note that the neighborhood is undergoing gentrification—a term referring to the process by which lower-income neighborhoods are gradually repopulated by more affluent residents, leading to a change in the area’s character and, consequently, a rise in property values.

Alexandria is home to one of Greece’s most prestigious institutions of higher education—the National Technical University of Athens (the “Polytechnic”). The area is also home to the National Archaeological Museum and Strefi Hill, which serves as a “green lung” and offers a spectacular vantage point overlooking all of Athens, including the Acropolis, of course. At the foot of the hill is an open-air farmers’ market with stalls offering a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, fish, and more.

Location

Central Athens, bordering the Kolonaki neighborhood to the east. Located between Patission, Panepistimio, and Alexandras Avenues.

Transportation

The nearest metro station is Victoria (Green Line); there are also several bus routes.

Major locations

The National Archaeological Museum, Stratis Hill, Polytechnic University.

Rental potential

Students, artists, and intellectuals, as well as tourists and more affluent residents, who in recent years have shown growing interest in settling in this unique neighborhood.

Good to know

In the evenings, the cafes and restaurants are bustling with people, including both neighborhood residents and Athenians from more affluent neighborhoods who make their way to Exarchia’s thriving culinary scene. We highly recommend not missing the graffiti tour that winds through the neighborhood’s streets—a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
